LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville women's soccer team closed out it's regular season with a 3-3 tie against visiting TCU Saturday. Depending on results from Saturday night's Conference USA schedule, the Cards will be either a three, four or five seed and will face East Carolina or Charlotte on Wednesday in St. Louis in the first round of the C-USA Tournament.
"This was an outstanding effort against a talented TCU team that needed a win to advance to the tournament," noted U of L Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
" I thought we played extremely well offensively, but unfortunately we were not as strong on the defensive end," Ferguson added.
TCU(6-11-1, 4-4-1 C-USA) picked up a free kick just outside the 18 yard box a little over two minutes into the match, and Jessi Moore beat U of L keeper Meredith Miller for her ninth goal of the season and a 1-0 TCU lead.
The Cards(11-4-3, 4-5-1 C-USA) responded with a pair of goals in a little over a three minute span to take a 2-1 lead.
Jamie Craft took a feed from freshman Monique Gjini, dribbled in and deked TCU keeper Lindsay White, burying her 12th goal of the season at 23:50 to even the game at one.
The goal places Craft alone in fourth place all-time at U of L in single season goals.
In the 28th minute Gjini broke in, and after her first shot was stopped by White, scored her seventh goal of the season on the rebound to put the Cards in front.
Freshman Erica Robinson tallied her first career goal at 72:37 on a rebound off a shot by Gjini to give the Cards a 3-1 cushion, but a desperate TCU team battled back to send the match into extra time.
Cara Toulouse scored her second of the season in the 80th minute from outside the 18, beating Cardinal keeper Tiffany Hansen, and Moore added her second of the game at 83:40 to knot the match at three.
The Frogs outshot the Cards 3-0 in the first overtime, while U of L turned the tables in the second extra stanza, outshooting TCU 3-1. The Cards held a 22-15 advantage for the match.
White made seven saves to help the Frogs to the tie.
Craft paced U of L with six shots, while Gjini added five. Nine different Cardinal got a shot away on the afternoon.
In a pregame ceremony, team manager Scott Norton, Jen Romanello, Jenny Starr, Heather Orahood, Miller, Mandy Rost and Lisa Martin were all honored as it was senior day for the first full recruiting class of Ferguson's tenure as coach of the Cards.
The 2004 team has already set or tied team records for wins(11), fewest losses(4), most overtime games(6), best winning percentage(.694), fewest goals allowed(16), most shutouts(11), and goals against average(0.84).
Miller now holds the school records for single season shutouts(8) and GAA(0.62), as well as career minutes played(5,463) and shutouts(16).
Gjini's assist places her in a tie for the fifth best single season total in U of L history(5), and Rost's career total of 13 helpers is fourth-best all-time.
The Cards will depart for St. Louis on Tuesday.
