
Damar Johnson Advances to Round of Sixteen in Midwest Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - - University of Louisville sophomore Damar Johnson advanced to the third round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional hosted by the University of Michigan.
Johnson defeated Indiana's Ryan Recht 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 in the opening round of the main draw. He went on to beat Indiana State's Anton Tsymbalov 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. Johnson will play Jose Orozco of Western Michigan on Sunday.
Senior Octavian Nicodim, who went undefeated in the qualifying bracket to reach the main draw, defeated Northwestern's Christian Tempke 6-3, 6-4, but fell to Notre Dame's Stephen Bass 6-4, 7-6(6) in the second round.
Junior Jeremy Clark was edged by Paul Rose of Purdue 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 in the first round while freshman Slavko Radman lost to Notre Dame's Brent D'Amico 7-5, 6-2.
In doubles action, the team of Berrido and Mark Kennedy defeated Wisconsin's Alex Kasarov and Lachezar Kasorov in the first round. Johnson and Nicodim topped Ivan Kovalev and Karol Zarucki of Illinois-Chicago 8-3 to reach the second round. They will face D.J. Geatz and Brian Lipinski of Minnesota in Sunday's match.
The team of Clark and Radman moved to the second round when Northwestern's Jamie Friedland and Willy Lock defaulted. Clark and Radman will face RK Bacallo and Alex Birchmeier of Western Michigan on Sunday.
Stefan Naughton and Pablo Camacho fell to Minnesota's Adriene Debreyne and Avery Ticer 8-4 in the opening round.
"I am extremely pleased with three of our four doubles teams advancing to the round of 32 in the Midwest Regional Championships," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I am especially proud of Jhonny Berrido and Mark Kennedy's win over a very tough Wisconsin team. This their first tournament playing together and it was a great start for a potentially good doubles team."
