University of Louisville men's tennis player Jhonny Berrido is the Conference USA Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 18.
Berrido, a sophomore from LaVega, Dominican Republic, picked up straight-set wins at No. 1 singles in U of L's first matches of the season. He beat Brian Butt of Wright State, 6-0, 6-1, as the Cards went on to win 7-0. Berrido posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Murray State's Zak Bahri in a U of L 7-0 sweep. Berrido teamed up with Octavian Nicodim at No. 1 doubles against Wright State, earning an 8-4 victory. Berrido is currently ranked 17th in the Midwest Region, while the Cardinals started the season at No. 52 in the ITA national rankings.
"Jhonny Berrido is trying to assert himself as one of the top players in Conference USA," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Early in the season, he is doing a good job of following in the footsteps of last year's number one player, Cody Conley, who is now playing professionally."
U of L (2-0) will play host to Southern Illinois Friday, January 23 at 6 p.m.
