Softball Falls to No. 21 South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Louisville softball team lost to No. 21 South Florida 7-0 and 2-1 in a Conference USA doubleheader Saturday at South Florida.
The Bulls got on the scoreboard early as Katrina Dowd led off the first inning with a single and moved to second on Shelly Riker's sacrifice bunt to set up Carmela Liwag's two-run homer to give South Florida a 2-0 lead.
Louisville had an opportunity to score in the second when Keola Calderon's leadoff walk and two Bulls errors loaded the bases with one out, but South Florida ace Leigh Ann Ellis struck out the next two Cardinal batters to get out of the jam.
The Bulls added another run in the third when Christie Chap man reached on an error, moved to second on Renee Oursler's single, took third when Krista Holle grounded out and scored on Samantha Ray's sacrifice bunt to make it a 3-0 game.
Riker led off the fourth with an infield hit, stole second, took third on Lewellen's single and scored on a sacrifice hit off the bat of Holly Groves to give South Florida a 4-0 lead.
The Bulls increased their lead in the fifth as Ray delivered a two-out single, stole second, and scored on Dowd's base hit. Riker followed with an infield single. Liwag's two-run double made it a 7-0 game.
Louisville's Sara Bausher broke up Ellis' no-hitter in the sixth when she beat out an infield hit, Calderon followed with another single to account for the Cards' only hits in the contest.
Louisville starter Krystle Herold (4-7) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits in one inning. Jessica Rak entered the game in relief and allowed five runs, four of them earned and struck out five in 5.2 innings.
Ellis (26-6) picked up the shutout win, allowing two hits and striking out five in six innings. The Bull pounded out 12 hits in the game.
In the second game, U of L scored early as Shannon Nord led off with a single, moved to second on Sara Bausher's fielder's choice, took third when Calderon hit into a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Lisa McMillan to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
USF tied the game in the fourth as Groves singled, took second when Christie Chapman was hit by a pitched and crossed the plate on a Louisville error.
The Bulls took the lead in the fifth when Dowd doubled, moved to third on Riker's hit and scored on Liwag's sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 game.
U of L starter Krystle Herold (4-8) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits in six innings. Offensively, the Cardinals had six hits. Nord was 3-for-4 with a run scored in the game.
Leigh Ann Ellis (27-6) picked up the win in relief, holding the Cards scoreless and allowing two hits and striking out five in four innings.
Louisville (19-17, 10-6) and South Florida (45-12, 13-3) will conclude the three-game series Sunday at noon.
