LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Conference USA opponent Saint Louis 2-0 Sunday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals scored the only runs in the contest in the first inning when Shannon Nord led off with a single, stole second and scored on a double by Nicole Sparks. Keola Calderon's base hit sent Sparks home to give U of L the 2-0 lead.
The Billikens had the bases loaded in the first and third, but Louisville starting pitcher Jessica Rak and the Cardinal defense held to preserve the shutout.
Rak (11-7) picked up the win, allowing four hits and striking out six in 6.0 innings. Reliever Krystle Herold pitched the seventh inning and retired all three Billiken batters to notch her first save of the season. Offensively, the Cards had seven hits in the game. Sparks went 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a triple - a home run shy of hitting for the cycle - one RBI and one run scored.
Saint Louis starter Nicole Bohnenstiehl (11-7) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out eight in six innings. Saint Louis drops to 14-12 (7-10 C-USA).
