Softball Splits Purdue Doubleheader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Purdue, taking the first game 2-0 and falling 9-3 in the nightcap Saturday at Ulmer Stadium.
In the first game, Louisville broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Shannon Nord led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amy Summers. Nord reached third when Sara Bausher singled and took second on the throw. Keola Calderon reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Nord and Bausher to score and give the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Louisville starter Jessica Rak (4-4) got the complete game shutout win, giving up one hit and striking out four. She held the Boilermakers hitless until the sixth inning. Bausher finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Purdue starter Leighann Burke took the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits in six innings. Andrea Hillsey's double in the sixth inning was the Boilermakers' only hit.
In the nightcap, Purdue jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first as Andrea Hillsey singled, stole second and scored on Heidi Foster's base hit.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the third when Lisa McMillan led off with a single and Lacy Wood followed with a two-run homer to make it a 2-1 game.
The Boilermakers tied the contest at 2-2 in the fourth when Becky Stone reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Staci Falzon's triple.
Louisville answered again in the bottom half of the inning when Bausher led off with a double, took third on Aja Sherman's single and scored on McMillan's hit to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
Purdue put the Cards away with a five-run fifth inning. Angi Roembke reached on a Louisville error, moved to second on Hillsey's sacrifice bunt and scored on Foster's double to tie the game at 3-3. Angela Knight drew a walk. Both Foster and Knight advanced on a wild pitch before Lauren Devich drew a walk to load the bases and set up Jesse Jones' grand slam, making the score 7-3.
The Boilermakers added two more runs in the sixth when Tricia Lilley was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Roembke's infield single. Knight's two-run single scored Lilley and Roembke for the 9-3 lead.
Louisville starter Krystle Herold (0-4) took the loss, allowing four runs, three of them earned on eight hits and striking out two in 4.1 innings. Offensively, the Cardinals had eight hits. McMillan finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
Purdue reliever Leighann Burke (7-6) picked up the win, holding the Cardinals scoreless and allowing three hits in 3.1 innings. The Boilermakers (11-12) pounded out 13 hits in the game. Devich finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Louisville (7-10) will open conference play at Charlotte on March 19.
