MUNCIE, Ind. -- - Several University of Louisville men's tennis players competed in the 2002 Ball State Invitational Sept. 27-29. Freshman Josh Surowski won the 'C' singles consolation draw and the team of Jhonny Berrido and Jakob Gustafsson reached the finals of the 'A' Double consolation.

Surowski's only singles loss in the tournament was a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 contest against Saint Louis' Sanjeev Paramanathan on the first day. Surowski went on to defeat IPFW's Justin Clark 6-1, 6-0 to get to the semifinals where he defeated teammate sophomore Mark Kennedy 6-4, 6-2. In the finals, Surowski defeated Ryan Schnack of Northern Illinois 6-0, 6-2. Kennedy lost to Illinois State's Marek Blaskovic 6-0,6 -1 on Friday and defeated Mike Hoosien of Saint Louis 6-4, 6-2 and Valparaiso's Mike Menghini 7-6, 6-3 before falling to Surowski.

In 'A' singles Berrido defeated Michigan State's Jimmy McGuire 6-1, 6-4 and lost to Western Michigan's Ryan Maarschalk 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Octavian Nicodim beat Ball State's Matt Baccarani 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 before losing to Illinois State's Jason Smit 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(6).

Freshman Jeff French topped Butler's Scott Newmark 6-4, 6-3 and lost to Western Michigan's Justin Kates 6-1, 6-1 in the 'B' singles draw. Gustafsson defeated IPFW's Lucas Boyer 6-0, 6-2 before falling to Illinois State's Ben Cappuccitti 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles action, Berrido and Gustafsson lost to Butler's Kevin and Brandon Gill 8-2 in the first round of the 'A' bracket. In the consolation draw, Berrido and Gustafsson defeated Ben Durham-Freer and Jeff Vrabel of Valparaiso 8-5. In the semifinals, they beat Western Michigan's Mike Findling and Jose Orozco 8-4 before losing to Toledo's Dipesh Rao and Todd Wojtkowski 9-7 in the finals.

Jeff French and Mark Kennedy fell to Pablo Barriga and Eridk Martinez of Northern Illinois 8-3 in the first round of the 'C' doubles draw. They went on to top Mike Menghini and Chris Widneyer of Valparaiso 8-3 before losing to Khalid Al Nabhani and Tony Tran of Toledo 8-5.

The U of L men's tennis team will host the fourth annual Louisville Fall Invitational Oct. 4-6 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
