BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Bing Sun's 16 kills were not enough as the University of Louisville volleyball team fell to host Indiana 3-1 in the final game of the Indiana Invitational.
Louisville drops to 9-3 with the 18-30, 25-30, 32-30, 22-30 loss. Indiana jumps to 10-2 for the season.
"We could not seem to grab the momentum and when we did, they stepped up and took it back," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin.
In the first game, the Hoosiers blew out to a 8-2 to begin the match. Louisville had a cold hitting hand having only eight kills with 13 errors on 46 attacks. Trailing 12-9, let IU run off 10 unanswered points. IU hit .250 and outblocked U of L 5-0. IU's Christina Archibald had eight kills to lead the Hoosiers.
"Our hitting was cold and they were blocking well," said Yelin. The second game stayed close with eight ties to 17-17. IU then broke the stalemate with a five-point run punctuated by an ace by Archibald and a U of L time out. Louisille came as close as three at 25-22 on a kill by Stacey Mercer, but the Cardinals were outscored 5-3 down the stretch to take a 0-2 game deficit into the break. in the third game, U of L stayed close but did not take the lead until 24-22. IU battled back and went to match point at 29-28. Louisville's Anastasia Zaitseva had a kill, a block and an ace to take U of L up 31-30 and a Lena Ustymenko kill gave U of L the win. Louisville's hitting finally showed signs of life with a .341 percentage in the third game with 21 kills on 44 attacks and six errors. The Cards got some blocking from their front line with four to IU's two. Zaitseva had seven kills in the win.
Indiana took control of the final game immediately, running the score up 12-1. The Cardinals could get no closer than five points when Sun had a cross court kill to bring U of L to 18-13. The Cardinals could not shut down the IU attack. The Hoosiers hit .356 with 22 kills on 45 attacks in the final set. Sun and Ustymenko earned All-Tournament honors.
