Fayetteville, Ark. -- Bing Sun had 19 kills and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a three game sweep of Arkansas in the first day of the Morning News Invitational.
The Cardinals improved their record to 5-2 with the 30-28, 30-22, 30-27 win. The loss was Arkansas' first of the season in eight matches.
The Cardinals used strong blocking and a hot hitting hand with a .305 hitting percentage and 10 blocks to Arkansas' five.
In the first game, Arkansas took off to a 9-6 lead before the Cardinals' Bing Sun's hitting heated up. U of L closed the gap, and trailing by just one at 18-17, went on a 7-3 run to go up 24-21 and did not trail again. Arkansas held off the Cardinals for three game points but fell 30-28. Sun had eight of the Cardinals 18 kills in the first set. The Cards hit .277 with 18 kills on 47 attacks and out-blocked the Lady Razorbacks 5-1.
The Cardinals powerd out to a 12-4 lead in the second game and then had to turn back a Razorback rally that had Arkansas scoring four straight points. After Yelin called time out, the Cards responded with a 9-2 run to widen the lead. Arkansas could get no closer than six when Jennifer Haaser smacked a cross court shot to bring the score to 25-19. Louisville finished out the game on a 5-3 run. Senior middle blocker Stacey Mercer had five kills and two blocks to lead the Cardinals in the second set. Haaser continued in her role as the Razorback's go-to hitter with five kills and 13 attacks.
Louisville did not lead until late in the deciding game. The Cardinals tied three times but couldn't break through until 28-27 when Sun smacked a winner. Mercer had one of her 7 kills for the 29th point and a blocking error by the Lady Backs ended the match.
Anastasia Zaitseva added 10 kills and three blocks to the effort.
