Softball falls to Columbia 5-4, defeats Drake 12-3

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Louisville softball team fell to Columbia University 5-4 Saturday on the second day of the Missouri Softball Classic. Snow and subfreezing temperatures forced the games to be moved inside the confines of Devine Pavilion.
In the game against Columbia, the Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Kenzie Meisenburg led off with an infield single and moved to third on Keola Calderon's double. Meisenburg scored when Melissa Jacobo grounded out to give U of L a 1-0 lead. Calderon scored on Aja Sherman's base hit to put Louisville up 2-0.
Columbia capitalized on two bases-loaded walks, four hits and one Louisville error to score five runs in the fourth inning and take a 5-2 lead.
U of L scored in the sixth when Sara Bausher reached on a fielder's choice, moved the third on Caldern's single and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jacobo to make the score 5-3.
In the top of the seventh Nicole Sparks drew a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a double by Lisa Estes to bring Louisville within one and make the score 5-4, but could get no closer despite loading the bases with one out. The final score stood at 5-4.
The Cardinals were led by Calderon who finished two for four with a double. Starter Kelly Blois (0-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, three of them earned on three hits.

In the second game of the day, the Cardinals hammered out 14 hits including seven doubles one by Melissa Jacobo to go with her triple and a grand slam to score 12 runs and defeat Drake 12-3 in five innings.
Louisville scored two in the top of the first by Kenzie Meisenburg led off with a single, moved to second on Sara Bausher's sacrifice bunt and scored on Keola Calderon's double. Calderon crossed the plate on Melissa Jacobo's triple to give U of L a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals put up a five spot in the second inning, Lisa McMilan led off with a double and scored on a double by Lisa Estes for a 3-0 game. Estes moved to third on Shannon Nord's sacrifice bunt and came home on Meisenburg's base hit to increase the lead to 4-0. Bausher followed with a single to move Meisenburg to second and Calderon reached on an error to set up Melissa Jacobo's grand slam - the first in the three-year history of Louisville softball. Jacobo's home run gave the Cards an 8-0 lead.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom half of the inning when Kristin Moeller singled, moved to second on Amber Payne's walk, advanced to third on Michelle Markham's single and crossed the plate on Lauren Smith's base hit to make the score 8-1.
U of L put up two more runs in the third when Nord led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and came home on Meisenburg's double. Meisenburg moved to third when Bausher grounded out and scored when Jacobo grounded out to make the score 10-1.
Drake scored two in the fourth when Jamie Waterman led off with a walk, moved to second on Brook Buchanan's base hit, advanced to third on Kara DeShaw's sacrifice bunt and scored on Smith's single. A Louisville error sent Buchanan home and made the score 10-3.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the top of the fifth when Meisenburg reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Bausher's double. Bausher then crossed the plate on a double by Jacobo to give U of L the 12-3 win.
Jacobo went three for four with a double, a triple and a grand slam - a single shy of hitting for the cycle - seven RBI and a run scored. Meisenburg also went three for four with a double, scored four runs and drove in two. Louisville starter Jessica Rak (8-5) picked up the win allowing three runs, two of them earned, on eight hits and striking out three.
Louisville (8-12) will face Columbia at noon and Missouri at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, the final day of the Missouri Softball Classic.
