COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Louisville softball team lost to Drake 4-3 Friday in the first game of the Missouri Softball Classic.
The Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Kenzie Meisenburg led off with a base hit and moved to second on Sara Bausher's single to set up Melissa Jacobo's two-run double.
Drake responded in the bottom half of the inning when Lauren Smith drew a walk and scored on Julie Moses' double to cut U of L's lead to 2-1.
The Bulldogs tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when Amber Payne led off with a walk, moved to second when Molai Bouphakeo grounded out and scored on Brooke Buchanan's double. Moses' single scored Buchanan and Kara DeShaw who had reached on a fielder's choice to give Drake a 4-2 lead.
Lisa Estes led off the fourth with her first career home run to pull the Cards within one and make the score 4-3. Louisville had an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the sixth, but could not convert with the bases loaded and one out. The Cardinals stranded 10 runners in the game.
Offensively, Louisville pounded out 11 hits including five doubles and a home run. Jacobo finished batting three for three with two doubles and two RBI. Sherman also went three for three with two doubles. Louisville starter Jessica Rak (6-5) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits and striking out one in 3.1 innings. Krystle Herold provided solid relief in 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on four hits.
Drake reliever Katie Shimon (1-0) picked up the win, allowing no runs on five hits and striking out three in four innings pitched. The Bulldogs improve to 1-12.
Louisville (6-11) will face tournament host Missouri in Friday's nightcap at 6:00 p.m.
