Softball Splits Evansville Doubleheader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville softball team defeated Evansville 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader while the Purple Aces took the nightcap 3-2 Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium.
In the first game, Evansville took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Brooke Luker singled and scored on Jamie Davison's double.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the fourth when Keola Calderon reached on a fielder's choice and Melissa Jacobo drew a walk to set up Nicole Sparks' two-run double, giving U of L a 2-1 lead.
Sparks finished the game with a double and two RBI. Louisville starter Jessica Rak (6-4) allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out four.
Evansville was led by Davison who went two for three with an RBI. Aces' starter Katie Markle (6-6) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out three in six innings.

In the second game, the Cards got on the score board in the bottom of the first when Meisenburg singled and moved to second on an Evansville error. Jacobo's base hit brought in Meisenburg to give U of L a 1-0 lead.
Louisville put up another run in the second when Lisa McMillan reached on an error, moved to second when Aja Sherman grounded out and advanced to third on Shannon Nord's single. Meisenburg's base hit scored McMillan to give the Cards a 2-0 advantage.
The Aces evened the score in the third when Luker singled and moved to second on Broerman's walk. Haven Shank's double scored Luker and Broerman to tie the game at 2-2.
Evansville pulled ahead in the fourth when Emily Winters singled, moved to second on Kellie Pebler's walk, Broerman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Winters scored on a wild pitch to give the Aces a 3-2 lead.
Meisenburg led the Cards going two for three with an RBI and a run scored. Louisville starter Krystle Herold (0-5) took the loss allowing three earned runs and striking out one in 3.2 innings pitched.
Evansville starter Casey Clutch (6-6) got the win, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and striking out four in seven innings. The Aces were led offensively by Winters, who went two for four with a run scored. Evansville moves to 12-12 on the season.
Louisville (6-10) will travel to Columbia, Mo. to play the University of Missouri Classic Tournament March 8-10. Other teams participating include Drake University, Columbia University and the University of Missouri. The Cardinals are scheduled to open the tournament Friday, March 8 against Drake at noon.
