Softball Loses to Middle Tennessee 8-5

COOKEVILLE, Tenn.- The University of Louisville softball team lost to Middle Tennessee 8-5 in the Tennessee Tech Icebreaker Softball Tournament on Sunday.
The Blue Raiders got on the scoreboard early in the first inning when Kip Phillips hit a double and Jennifer Martinez singled to bring her in and make the score 1-0.
The Blue Raiders pounded out five hits and scored three runs in the bottom of the second to make the score 4-0.
Middle Tennessee added three more insurance runs on three hits to make the score 7-0. Martinez's solo shot in the bottom of the fourth gave the Blue Raiders an 8-0 lead.
The Cardinals put up four runs in the top of the fifth as Kenzie Meisenburg led off with a single and scored on Shannon Nord's double. Nord scored on Keola Calderon's home run. Melissa Jacobo then singled to reach base, moved to third on Nicole Sparks' single and scored on Kristi Rozelle's double to make the score 8-4.
Louisville added another run in the top of the seventh when Jacobo singled, moved to second when Aja Sherman reached on an error, advanced to third on Sparks' base hit and scored when Rozelle reached on a fielder's choice to make the score 8-5.
Offensively, Louisville finished the game with 11 hits. The Cardinals were led by Meisenburg, who went three for three with a run scored, and Sparks, who batted three-for-four. Louisville starter Krystle Herold took the loss allowing seven earned runs on nine hits. Louisville falls to 3-8 and will face host Tennessee Tech on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the final game of the tournament.
