Softball Tops Northwestern

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Northwestern 6-1 Friday at Ulmer Stadium on the first day of the University of Louisville Spring Tournament.
Keola Calderon's solo home run in the bottom of the first gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats responded in the top of the third when Rane Gunderson reached on a base hit, moved to third on Erin Mobley's single. Carri Leto's walk loaded the bases. Erin Jancic drew a bases-loaded walk to score Gunderson and tie the game at 1-1.
Louisville put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth when Kenzie Meisenburg led off with a single, and moved to second on Sara Bausher's walk. Bausher and moved to third and Meisenburg scored when Shannon Nord reached on an error to give Louisville a 2-1 lead. Nord stole second. Melissa Jacobo's two-run single brought in Bausher and Nord to make the score 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Calderon led off with a single, moved to second when Jacobo drew a walk. Aja Sherman's walk loaded the bases. A Northwestern error allowed Calderon and Hayley Yourous, pinch running for Jacobo, to score and give U of L a 6-1 advantage.
Offensively, Jacobo finished the game two-for-two with two RBI and Calderon went two-for-four with a home run. Louisville starter Jessica Rak (5-4) allowed one run on six hits and struck out four in seven innings.
Northwestern starter Brie Brown (0-5) gave up six runs, three earned on six hits and struck out six. The Wildcats fall to 5-6-1 on the season.
U of L (5-8) will face Northern Iowa (10-3) Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
