Softball Falls to Virginia; Defeats Bowling Green

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville softball team lost to Virginia 6-0 and defeated Bowling Green State 7-5 on Saturday at the Tennessee Tech Softball Classic.
Virginia scored early in the bottom of the first when Valerie Sevilla led off with a walk, moved to second on Kelly McCabe's base hit, advanced to third on Heather Field's walk and scored on Kristen Dennis' single to give UVA a 1-0 lead.
The Cavaliers scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Stephanie Calhoun drew a walk, moved to second on Johanna Kaiser's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on Tracy Sherman's groundout and crossed the plate on Hannah Owings infield single to make the score 2-0.
Virginia took advantage of five hits and a Louisville error to put up a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning and make the score 6-0.
UVA starter Kristen Davis (3-1) tossed a complete game no-hitter and struck out 12 Louisville batters. The Cavaliers improve to 6-3 on the season. Louisville starter Jessica Rak (2-4) took the loss, allowing six runs, three of them earned, on five hits in 4.1 innings.
Louisville vs. Virginia 2/23In the game against Bowling Green, the Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Jody Johnson singled, moved to second on Renee Rosemeier's base hit, advanced to third when Libby Voshell hit into a fielder's choice. Johnson and Voshell crossed the plate on Crystal Wilson's two-run single to make the score 2-0. Wilson scored on Natalie Phillips' base hit to add another run and give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals capitalized on three hits, two walks and four Bowling Green errors to put up a seven spot in the fifth inning. Kenzie Meisenburg reached on a Bowling Green error, moved to third on Keola Calderon's single and scored on another Falcon error to give the Cards their first run. Nicole Sparks reached on a fielder's choice and Aja Sherman reached on another Bowling Green miscue. Calderon scored on the play and pulled the Cards within one. Jodi Thomas drew a walk to load the bases. Lisa Estes' three-run double scored Sparks, Sherman and Thomas, to give the Cardinals a 5-3 lead. Shannon Nord reached on a walk, and stole second, Estes scored when the attempt to throw Nord out went into the outfield and gave U of L a 6-3 lead. Nord moved to third when Sara Bausher grounded out and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-3.
Bowling Green scored two In the bottom of the seventh, when Marla Murphy led off with a double and crossed the plate on Johnson's base hit to make the score 7-4. Johnson came home on a Louisville error to make the score 7-5.
Offensively, Estes finished batting two-for-three with three RBI and a run scored. Calderon also hit two-for-three with a run scored and an RBI. Jessica Rak (3-4) picked up the win allowing two runs, one earned on four hits and striking out three in six innings.
Louisville (3-7) will play Middle Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech on Sunday in the Tennessee Tech Softball Tournament.
