Sophomore Octavian Nicodim won the 'A' singles at the Louisville Fall Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- - The University of Louisville won the 'A' and 'B' singles flights and staked a runner-up finish in the 'A' singles division Sunday as the 2002 U of L Men's Tennis Fall Invitational came to a close at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

Louisville sophomore Octavian Nicodim defeated West Virginia's Tony Epkey 6-2, 6-2 and Cardinal freshman Jhonny Berrido topped UT-Martin's Martin Tamla 6-2, 6-2 to set up an all-Louisville final in the Flight A singles. Nicodim won the matchup 6-3, 6-0.

In the 'B' Flight, U of L junior Jake Kirts gutted out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Ball State's Patrick Thompson to reach the finals, where Kirts defeated Ball State's Kevin Burnett6-4, 6-2 to take the 'B' flight title.

Louisville freshman Josh Surowski fell to Ball State's Bryon Weinberg 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals of the 'C' flight. Weinberg then fell to Toledo's Freddy Gomez 6-4, 6-3, in the finals.

In doubles action, Ball State's Kevin Burnett and Patrick Thompson took the 'A' doubles title with an 8-5 win over Saint Louis' Tom deLarzan and Taylor Curran. Ball State's Klint Knable and Paul Newman won the 'B' doubles with an 8-5 decision over West Virginia's Ian Bliss and Chris Green. In the 'C' flight, West Virginia's J.R. Randall and Kyle Markham defeated the team of Bryon Weinberg for Ball State and Brian Stephenson from Eastern Kentucky 8-4 to claim in championship match.

"I am extremely happy with the team effort we had this weekend to win the Louisville Fall Invitational Tournament," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "It's always a good thing when the players achieve this kind of success early in the year and early in their careers. This weekend we've shown that we are very deep and have a lot of talent and potential. Octavian Nicodim is showing the country that he is ready to have a breakout season."
