MUNCIE, Ind. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team competed in the Ball State Fall Invitational September 21-23. The Cardinals rounded out a field that consisted of Butler, Drake, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois, Illinois State, Indiana State, Kentucky, Michigan State, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Saint Louis, Toledo and Western Michigan.
Louisville freshman Mark Kennedy lost his opening round match to Todd Wojtkowski of Toledo 6-2, 6-4. Kennedy had byes in the first two rounds of the consolation bracket before falling in a tight match to Butler's Mike Weaver 7-6(7), 7-6(6).
Sophomore Matt Mayer lost his first round match to Anthony Perkins of Drake 6-0, 7-5, bounced back with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Toledo's Goran Topalo in the first round of the consolation bracket. After a second round bye Mayor was defeated by Jimmy Borendame from Butler 6-3, 6-1.
Freshman Sebastian Aspillaga knocked off Toledo's Dipesh Rao in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, but lost to Chris Varga of Illinois State 6-3,6-4.
Aspillaga teamed with fellow Cardinal Matt Mayer in the doubles bracket against Toledo's Alex Farrow-Mahon and Dipesh Rao. Despite a close, hard fought match Mayer and Aspillaga were defeated 9-7.
The Cardinals head home to Louisville for the October 5-7 Louisville Invitational at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
