UAB pitcher Andre Parks was perfect through five innings, and allowed only three baserunners in a 7-0 complete game victory over Louisville in Birmingham Friday night. Parks(5-0) retired the side in order in seven of the nine innings, only allowing singles to Dave Williams Jr. and Morgan Bojorquez, and a walk to J.T. LaFountain. He struck out five.
UAB(24-24, 6-16) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on three hits. First baseman Brandon Isbell doubled in catcher Al Hecklinski, who lead off with a double, and later scored on a single by second baseman Matt Gaulden. Center fielder Brandon Holmes lead off the third with a solo home run over the wall in right center to chase starter Mike Tisdale and give the Blazers a 3-0 lead. Cardinal reliever Carlos Fernandez replaced Tisdale and retired the side in order to end the third.
The Blazers upped the lead to 4-0 when, after two infield singles, third baseman Lee Jolly executed a hit and run, scoring Isbell from second. Designated hitter Cory Acklus ripped a two-out double down the left field line, and scored on a single to center by Hecklinski in the fifth, making it 5-0 Blazers.
The Blazers again notched a single run in the sixth when Reimers plated Jolly with a triple down the rightfield line making it 6-0. UAB scored a run in the sixth consecutive inning with a run in the seventh when Isbell doubled home Hecklinski for the final margin of 7-0.
Tisdale(7-6) took the loss, lasting just two innings, and giving up three runs on five hits. Fernandez gave up four runs on nine hits in his five innings of relief, striking out four. Andy Lopez-Cao gave up a hit and struck out one while pitching the eighth inning.
The Blazers pounded out 15 hits, eight of which went for extra bases, while the Cardinal bats were held to a season-low two hits. It is the third time U of L(27-25, 10-12) has been shutout this season.
The two teams will meet Saturday at 2:00p.m. ET, for game two of the series.
