Evansville Tops Softball

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Louisville softball team lost to Evansville 4-0 and 4-3 in a doubleheader Tuesday at Evansville.
In the first game, the Purple Aces broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jessica Huff led off with a double, moved to second on Bridget Broerman's single and scored on Haven Shank's sacrifice bunt to give Evansville a 1-0 lead.
Evansville added to their lead on Jamie Davison's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give the Aces the 4-0 win.
Louisville starter Tara McClure (18-6) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out one in six innings pitched. Evansville's Maggie Ross (11-7) got the complete game shutout, giving up six hits and striking out three in seven innings pitched.
Offensively, the Cardinals were led by Keola Calderon, who went two-for-three and Nikki Gaudio, who also finished the game two-for-three with a double.
In the second game, the Cards got on the board in the top of the first when Keola
Calderon reached on a walk, moved to second on Melissa Jacobo's base hit and scored on Candi Padilla's single to give Louisville an early 1-0 lead.
The Cards added two runs to their lead in the second when Val Smith reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on Coleen Coughlin's infield single, advanced to third on an Evansville error and crossed the plate on Kenzie Meisenburg's RBI single. Coughlin scored when Jacobo drew a bases-loaded walk to give U of L a 3-0 lead.
Davison's solo home run in the bottom of the fourth put the Aces on the board, making the score 3-1.
Evansville capitalized on three base hits and two Louisville errors to put up a three-spot and pull ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jacobo hit a two-out double to put the tying run at second, but the Cards could not take advantage to tie the game.
U of L starter Mandy Rockwell (6-4) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits and striking out one in 5.1 innings pitched. Evansville's Joni Woods (7-1) got the win, allowing three runs, one earned on six hits in seven innings pitched.
Offensively, Jacobo led the Cards, batting two-for-three with a double and one RBI.
Louisville (36-19, 11-4 C-USA) will face tenth-ranked DePaul in Conference USA action this weekend in their final regular season home games at Ulmer Stadium.
