LOUiSVILLE, Ky. -- Second baseman Nicole Sparks went two for three with a double and an RBI to lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 4-2 win and complete the sweep of visiting UAB at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals move to 36-17 on the season and 11-4 in C-USA action. UAB falls to 22-29 and 6-9 in the league.
"You can never count on a sweep in this league, home or away because of the competitiveness of C-USA softball, so today's win is very gratifying," said Sandy Pearsall, U of L head coach. Louisville record seven hits, four for extra bases. Pitcher Tara McClure pitched a complete game three-hitter, giving up just two runs, both of which were unearned for the win. She moves to 17-5 on the season. "Tara got serious and threw a nice game today," said Pearsall. "She pitched her way into a slight gam in the top of the seventh but pitched her way out which is a senior showing a lot of poise." Louisville put a pair of runs on the board in the first inning when Coleen Coughlin led off the game with a triple and scored on a Melissa Jacobo double. With two outs, Sparks doubled, scoring Jacobo for the seocnd run. The Cardinals added two more runs in the sixth when lead-off batter Kenzie Meisenburg reached on a error by shortstop Beth Mullins. Keola Calderon smacked an RBI double and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacobo. McClure loaded the bases to start the seventh and then gave up a single to pinch hitter Carrie Parker which scored Emily Scarbrough. Pinch runner Mandy Wyatt scored on a force play at home when the umpire ruled that catcher Lisa McMillan had pulled her foot from the plate. McClure got the final batter to ground out and left three Blazers stranded to end the game.
