Softball Defeats Houston in Eight Innings

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Conference USA opponent Houston 7-6 in eight innings on Sunday at Houston.
The Cougars jumped on the board early when Lindsay Durham opened the game with a double and scored on Ali McDougal's home run to give her team a 2-0 lead.
Houston added three more runs in the third inning as Leslie Seay reached first base on an error and scored when Arelis Ferreris reached on another Cardinal error. Ferreris scored on Kim Cote's two-run homer to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead.
U of L put up a five-spot in the fourth inning to tie the game. Christina Soto led off the inning with an infield single, she moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third when Nikki Gaudio grounded out and scored when Val Smith reached on a Cougar error. Smith advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on another passed ball and stole home on a double steal to make the score 5-2. Coleen Coughlin drew a walk to reach base, stole second on the double steal and advanced to third on Kenzie Meisenburg's base hit. Coughlin and Meisenburg scored on Keola Calderon's two-run double and brought the score to 5-4. Calderon tied the game when she crossed the plate on a Houston error.
With both teams unable to scored in regulation, the game when into an extra inning. Louisville's Meisenburg led off the eighth inning with a triple down the left field line and scored on Calderon's two-run homer to put the Cardinals up 7-5.
Houston pulled within one in the bottom half of the eighth when Durham led off with a solo home run to make the score 7-6. Louisville pitcher Tara McClure retired the next three batters to give the Cards the 7-6 win.
McClure (8-3) got the win, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four in 5.2 innings pitched. Offensively, the Cards were led by Kenzie Meisenburg who went four-for-five with a triple, a double, and two runs scored and Calderon who finished the game batting three-for-four with a double and the game-winning homerun, two runs scored and four RBI.
Louisville (22-11, 2-1) will play host to Indiana on Tuesday at Ulmer Stadium. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. start.
