
Softball Defeats Kentucky 10-1

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The U of L softball team took first place at the University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament by defeating host Kentucky 10-1 in six innings at the UK Softball Complex on Sunday.
The Cards got on the board early in the first when Kenzie Meisenburg led off with a single, and moved to second on Coleen Coughlin's infield hit. Candi Padilla's double to right center scored Meisenburg and Coughlin. Padilla crossed the plate on Nikki Gaudio's single to left field and gave Louisville a 3-0 lead.
Kentucky responded in the bottom of the second when Andrea Eilertson drew a walk to reach first, moved to second on Nikki Jones' hit, advanced to third on Leslie Kwiatkowski's single to center and scored on Beth Fogle's single to make the score 3-1.
Louisville added two insurance runs in the third when Coughlin led off with a base hit and scored on Keola Calderon's two-run homer to give the Cards a 5-1 lead
U of L put up a three-spot in the fifth when Coughlin led off with an infield single, moved to second when Calderon was hit by a pitch and scored on Padilla's single to left field. Padilla advanced to second and third on Melissa Jacobo's base hit and scored on a wild pitch. Jacobo scored on Nicole Sparks' double to give Louisville an 8-2 lead.
Louisville capped off the scoring in the sixth when Calderon singled to reach base was brought in on Padilla's two-run homer to make the score 10-1. With Kentucky unable to score in the bottom of the sixth, the Cards won on the eight-run rule.
"We hit the ball very well today," said U of L coach Sandy Pearsall. "Everything came together against Kentucky, I felt the team played one of its best games of the year.
Offensively,the Cardinals were led by Padilla who went three-for-four with a double and a homerun, four RBI and three runs scored. Coughlin finished the game hitting three-for-four with three runs scored and a stolen base. Calderon went two-for-three with a homerun, two RBI and two runs scored. Jacobo went two-for-four.
Louisville starter Tara McClure (6-1) allowed one run on eight hits and struck out four in six innings pitched.
Kentucky falls to 12-13, their starting pitcher Morgan Marr (8-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits and striking out one in five innings.
U of L (16-8) will travel to Sacramento, Calif. on Thursday to compete in the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State.
