Softball Opens Season with a Win

The University of Louisville softball team opened up the 2001 season with a 7-3 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay at the Metrodome Softball Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota.
The Cards got on the board in the top of the second inning when sophomore Melissa Jacobo drew a walk to reach first, moved to second on senior Candi Padilla's walk and scored on sophomore Nicole Sparks' double to make the score 1-0,
The Phoenix responded in the third inning by capitalizing on two base hits and two doubles to take a 3-1 lead.
Louisville scored five runs with two outs in the sixth inning. Jacobo led off with a double. Senior Christina Soto, entered the game as a pinch runner for Jacobo, moved to third when Sparks grounded out to second and scored on freshman Christy Rozelle's base hit. Rozelle moved to second on sophomore Lisa McMillan's single, advanced to third on freshman Nikki Gaudio's base hit and tied the game on senior Coleen Coughlin's infield single. Junior Kenzie Meisenburg's single scored McMillan for the game-winner to put the Cards ahead 4-3. Sophomore Keola Calderon brought in two more insurance runs for Louisville when her single to centerfield scored Coughlin and Meisenburg to give the Cards a 6-3 lead.
Rozelle added Louisville's final run of the game with her first career homerun, a solo shot to left center in the seventh inning.
Louisville pitcher Tara McClure (1-0) set a school record with 13 strikeouts in the game. She allowed three earned runs on five hits. Offensively, the Cards were led by Rozelle who went two for three with two RBI and two runs scored.
