Two University of Louisville singles players and two doubles teams advanced to the semifinals of the U of L Men's Tennis Fall Invitational at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
U of L senior Alex Sivertsen defeated Evansville's Troy Gillham 6-1, 6-0 in the second round of the "A" division to advance to Sunday's semifinal round, where he will face Vanderbilt's Jens Fredriksen at noon.
"Alex Sivertsen showed that he is back in form, winning quality matches in both singles and doubles," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "I am so proud of Alex's achievements. He has fought an uphill batter to overcome injuries and has shown that he will be a big part of this year's success."
Senior Brent McCombe defeated UT-Martin's Peter Allnutt 6-3, 6-4 in the "A" consolation draw and then beat Eastern Kentucky's Seth Hauser 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) to move to the semifinals. McCombe will face IUPU-Ft. Wayne's Ilyes Hassib on Sunday at noon.
Also in the "A" division, Louisville freshman Sebastian Aspillaga lost his second round match to Kentucky's Gustav Pousette 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Matt Mayer fell to Alon Savidor of Southern Illinois in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in the second round of "B" singles.
Freshman Matt Kennedy was defeated by Evansville's Derrick Boland 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the "C" division.
In "A" doubles, the Louisville team of Sivertsen and Mayer defeated Kentucky's Esmail and Pousett 9-7 to move to the semifinals, where they will play Indiana's Zach Held and Ryan Recht at 10:00 a.m.
Louisville's McCombe and Aspillaga teamed to beat Indianapolis' Hervey and Saulovic 8-2 in the "B" division quarterfinals. They will meet Austin Peay's Keller and Gregory in the semifinals Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
In "C" doubles, Louisville's Mark Kennedy teamed with Ball State's Michael Heule to beat Andrews and Hsieh of Saint Louis 8-6. They will face Evansville's Boland and Arguello Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the semifinals.
