INDIANAPOLIS -- The University of Louisville men's and women's swim teams won 14 races to sweep Butler in a dual meet held at IUPUI's pool. The men won 112-80 with the women squeaking by 110-95.
"We are getting back into our competitive mode and we raced well," said U of L head coach Rick Hill.
Catherine Dievendorf and Karen Annear were both double winners for the aquatic Cardinals. Dievendorf won the 1000-free and the 100-fly. Annear took the 200-free and the 100-back. The women were able to take both relay races as well. Angela Hong added to the point totals with a win in the 100-fly with Sara Mayne winning the 500-free. Madelyn Gaines helped the Cardinals edge the Bulldogs with a win in the last individual race of the meet, the 100-breast.
"Both Catherine and Karen are consistent point scorers for us," said Hill. "The women's meet was very close, so every race was crucial and we got the wins when we needed them.
The men's meet was not as closely contested, allowing the Cardinals to exhibition out the final two races (which they won but did not score).
After winning the 200-Medley Relay, the Cardinals won the next two races when Vinnie Souza won the 1000-free and Matt Bentley took the 200-free. As the meet moved on, Patrick McGonigal won the 400-IM, with Ryan Eatherly taking the 100-fly. Nils Lofgren and Jacob Grieb won the 100-back and 500-free respectively.
"Our men swam well and I liked the effort from the upperclassmen, especially the seniors," said Hill.
