
Field Hockey Wins Home Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In their first home game of the season, the University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Saint Louis University 3-1 on Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.
The Cardinals jumped to an early lead when senior Lainey Habeeb (Louisville, Ky.) scored on a penalty corner just 45 seconds into the game. Sophomores Keri Beckhorn (Tunkhannock, Pa.) and Pip Sanders (Sydney, Australia) assisted on the goal. Beckhorn followed up with the game-winner at 27:48 remaining in the first half to give U of L a 2-0 halftime lead. Freshman Casey Lehman (Palmyra, Pa.) assisted on the goal.
The Billkens got on the board two minutes into the second half when Kristen Burich (Louisville, Ky.) connected on a penalty corner with assists from Heather Mattingly (St. Louis, Mo.) and Keri Brunner (St. Louis, Mo.).
Beckhorn added an unassisted insurance goal with 28:37 remaining to give the Cards a 3-1 win.
The Cards will travel to Chicago to play Villanova on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 3:00 p.m. They will face host Northwestern on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1:00 p.m.
Louisville (3-2, 0-0 MAC) is off to its best start since 1992. They are currently ranked No. 17 in the HockeyPoint Coaches Poll. Beckhorn was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for the week on Sept. 5 and leads U of L and the conference in scoring with six goals.
SLU (1-4, 1-2 Norpac) will play Indiana University on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
