LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sonja Percan's 21 kills helped the University of Louisville volleyball team move one match closer to at least a share of the Conference USA regular season title.
Louisville swept South Florida 15-7, 15-5, 15-5 to improve their record to 15-10 and 12-3 in the league. South Florida falls to 14-14 and 7-8. Louisville needs to beat Houston on Sunday and get an assist from Cincinnati against Houston to tie for the regular season crown. The Cardinals have already clinched a first round bye, but are vying for the top seed.
"This year the race is as tight as it can get," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "Cincinnati, Houston and Louisville are all tangled up right now and by Sunday it will all shake out because this is the last conference weekend."
Louisville took advantage of South Florida's hitting slump and served aggressively to keep the Bulls on the defensive. The Cardinals notched seven aces, paced by setter Jing Ding's three. U of L outhit USF .333 to .109. The Cardinal middle blocking combination of Sherry Hurley and Stacey Mercer had 7 and 8 kills respectively, with Hurley adding a match-high four blocks.
The Cardinals play Houston at 1 p.m. Sunday at Cardinal Arena.
