COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Angie Silvas had 21 kills and 17 digs to lead UNLV to a 3-2 win over Louisville at the Maryland Invitational yesterday.
Louisville lost 4-15, 15-12, 8-15, 15-13, 12-15 to drop to 2-3 on the season. UNLV remains undefeated at 4-0.
UNLV overpowered Louisville in the first game hitting .296 to the Cards' .032. However, the Cardinals came back in the second set with improved hitting holding a lead of five or more points most of the way. However, it took the Cardinals five attempts at game point to put away the win, allowing the Rebels to pull within three points.
Strong hitting by UNLV and spotty blocking by the Cardinals allowed the Rebels to win the third game without being pressured.
"Against a hard-hitting, tall team like UNLV, our blocking had to be excellent. However, we didn't get our hands on enough balls to take the pressure off the back row," said U of L coach Leonid Yelin.
By the end of the match, UNLV had almost double the blocks U of L did at 15-8.
Louisville forced a fifth game when it squeaked by the Rebels 15-13 in the fourth. Louisville hit .325 in the fourth set, led by Sonja Percan, who had five kills with no errors on 11 attacks.
"We were strong in the fourth game and everything we seemed to hit fell in somewhere," said Yelin.
In the rally-scoring fifth game, Louisville stayed close throughout before falling 15-12.
Louisville had two hitters in double-digit kills with Percan and Kelly McClain each recording 19.
