CHICAGO - Freshman Sonja Percan had 22 kills and 12 digs to help Louisville to a 3-2 win over DePaul and stretch its streak to 11 straight in Conference USA volleyball action Friday night.
The 13-15, 15-5, 5-15, 15-8, 15-12 win helped Louisville raised its record to 14-9 and 11-2 in Conference USA play. DePaul is 17-11 and 9-4 in C-USA.
"Both teams have been winning lately and were feeling confident. DePaul had a nice streak and the crowd sparked them several times," said Leonid Yelin. "All road wins are important in this league."
DePaul, which had a nine-match winning streak to start the week, overcame a 10-5 deficit in the first game to tie at 12 and then scored the game winning point when a Cardinal attack went wide. Prior to this match, Louisville was undefeated when it won the first game and was 1-9 when it loses the first game of the match.
Louisville asserted itself in the second game, outscoring the Blue Demons 11-2 after tying at four. However, match momentum swung when DePaul used a huge run in the third game to score nine unanswered points after trailing 3-1. The Cardinals managed just two more points before DePaul reeled off the final five straight points to win 15-5.
Louisville took the match to a fifth game with a late-game run of seven points after DePaul had tied the game at eight. In the final rally-scored game, the teams traded points. Louisville reached game point first at 14-12 and won on a cross court shot by Emily Roberson.
Kelly McClain added 17 kills, 19 digs and three solo blocks to help the cause.
The Cardinals play Marquette in Milwaukee tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
