BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Kelly McClain had 15 kills and two aces to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over UAB, giving the Cards their sixth straight win.
Louisville evened its season mark at 9-9 and moves up to 7-2 in Conference USA play. UAB drops to 8-14 and 1-8 in C-USA.
"We are back at full strength and it is beginning to dawn on us that we can take charge of a game," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "Earlier when we had injury problems we were just happy to hang in there and eke out a win."
Louisville allowed UAB to score the first two points of the first game before lowering the boom on the Blazers, scoring 13 straight points. UAB managed one more point on a Louisville miss but fell 15-2.
The Cardinals fell 15-8 in the second game after staying close early in the game. They rebounded in the third set using aggressive serving that resulted in five aces. With the scored tied at three, the Cardinals reeled off 12 unanswered points, eight of which came under the serving of freshman Sarah Drury.
The fourth game stayed closed until the 9-9 mark when Louisville pushed to game point with six straight points. UAB managed three more but lost the match when Sherry Hurley had a hook-shot to push Louisville to the win.
"It wasn't a pretty win but road wins aren't always the place for that," said Yelin.
