LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kelly McClain had 13 kills and a season-high six aces to lead Louisville to a three-game sweep of archrival Kentucky Sunday afternoon at Louisville Gardens.
The 15-3, 15-9, 16-14 win boosted Louisville's winning streak to eight straight matches and pushes its overall record to 11-9. Kentucky posts a 11-10 record. The win avenged Louisville's loss to the Wildcats on Sept. 22 when an 11-match win streak against UK was snapped.
"It is always easy to get up for this match. It is all about pride," said senior Sherry Hurley. "We have played in the Sweet Sixteen and for conference championships but it is the Kentucky match that I can tell you every year how we did, how I did and practically every point played. These are the matches you remember for the rest of your life. It is kind of funny, with our foreign players, the first year they have no clue about the rivalry and we try to make them understand. By the second year, they are totally into it. It is that contagious. It is great fun!"
Hurley had seven kills and four blocks in the match. The difference between the two matches may have been the presence of setter Jing Ding, who was not eligible at the time of the first match. Since her return, the Cardinals are 8-1. She had six kills, 10 digs and 34 assists. Sonja Percan was the other Cardinal in double digit kills with 10 kills, 12 digs and one ace.
