CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Former Louisville assistant coach Patty Dennison had to face the very players she had recruited now that she is UNCC head coach. Her former charges then beat her new squad 3-1.
Louisville, 3-8 overall, even their conference mark at 1-1. UNCC fell to 4-8 and 0-2 in C-USA volleyball.
"Obviously she has us scouted," laughed U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "Every conference win is important and this will turn into a nice rivalry between our schools."
Other than the first game, Dennison's squad pushed U of L continuously.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first game before the 49ers came back with four unanswered points to push Louisville. However, UNCC would not score again as the Cardinals cruised to the easy win. The Cards hit .277 to UNCC's .077.
The 49ers grabbed momentum in the second set when they powered to a 7-3 lead and forced Louisville to call timeout. The Cards made progress when they ran off three straight points but could get no closer than 10-7. Louisville hitting errors and an ace by Ann McMillan ended the game.
Louisville used an 11-point run to make up for a 6-2 early deficit in the third game. UNCC threatened briefly with a five-point run of its own before the Cards scored on a Sonja kill and an ace by Sarah Drury to end the game.
The fourth game stayed close, tying at four, five and seven before Louisville hitting took its toll on UNCC's defense and built a 12-7 lead. A pair of kills by Sonja Percan took the Cards to match point before McClain had the match-winning kill.
Louisville was led by McClain and Percan who had 18 and 20 kills respectively.
