CHICAGO - Nate Johnson, Tony Williams and Marques Maybin have been named to the 1999-2000 All-Conference USA Third Team announced today from the C-USA office in Chicago.
Johnson ranks second on the team in scoring (14.0), assists (3.1) and steals (1.9) this year. The 6-6, 215-pound senior forward exploded for a career-high 35 points Saturday afternoon in the Cards' regular-season finale, marking just the 19th time a U of L player scored as many as 35 points in a single game and the first since DeJuan Wheat accomplished the feat on Jan. 17, 1996. Johnson, who is currently second in all-time scoring in Conference USA and 15th at U of L with 1,494 career points, is 13th in the conference in scoring, third in steals, seventh in field goal percentage (.484) and 14th in assists this season.
Williams, a 6-8, 220-pound senior forward, leads the Cardinals in three-point field goal (55-of-152) and is third in scoring (14.0). In Conference USA, Williams ranks 16th in scoring, 10th in field goal percentage (.432) and 15th in rebounding (6.3), assists (3.0) and blocked shots (0.8). The Louisville native has scored 20 or more points on seven occasions this season and was cited by Dick Vitale in January as one of the nation's top five most improved players.
Maybin leads the Cardinals in scoring and is 10th in the conference, averaging 14.4 points per game. The 6-3 junior forward has scored in double figures in 19 of 28 games this season, in which U of L has compiled a 17-2 record. Maybin earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors earlier this season after averaging 21 points in wins over Syracuse and Marquette. The Clarksville, Tenn., has averaged 17.0 points over the last nine games and currently ranks sixth in the conference in field goal percentage (.491) and seventh in free throw percentage (.761).
Cincinnati's Kenyon Martin and Pete Mickeal, DePaul's Quentin Richardson, Houston's Gee Gervin and Saint Louis' Justin Love were named to the C-USA First Team.
