Tim Nowak rejoined the Louisville women’s soccer coaching staff in 2016 after serving as the Girls Program Director for the Kentucky Fire Juniors the previous seven years. Nowak previously worked for head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes from 2001-04. He has direct oversight over training, development and performance of the goalkeepers, while also providing support for all aspects of the Louisville program.
LOUISVILLE
In 2020-21, Emina Ekic was named Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ACC, while Gabby Kouzelos was named Third Team All-ACC. It marked the first time that a Louisville player has earned ACC Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Ekic was selected by Racing Louisville FC with the fifth pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft, becoming the first UofL player to be selected in the NWSL Draft.
In 2019, the Cardinals finished fourth in the ACC with a record of 5-3-2, and made their sixth NCAA Championship appearance with an overall record of 13-5-2. The Cardinals finished the season ranked No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
The Cardinals had three players earn All-ACC honors in 2019. Emina Ekic was named a first team All-ACC selection for the second straight year and her third straight year of earning All-ACC honors. Redshirt junior Gabby Kouzelos was named a second team All-ACC selection while senior Brooklynn Rivers earned third team All-ACC honors for the second straight year. Ekic was named a second team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches association for the second straight year.
In the fall of 2018 the Cardinals finished tied for fifth in the ACC with a record of 6-4, and made their fifth NCAA Championship appearance with an overall record of 12-7-0. Emina Ekic was named a second team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches association. She became the seventh All-American in school history and the first Cardinal to earn All-American honors since Christine Exeter was named a third team All-American in 2011. Ekic is also the first Louisville player to earn second team honors, with the previous six selections earning third and fourth team honors.
During the 2017 season, the Cardinals recorded another winning season while then freshman Emina Ekic garnered numerous awards. Ekic was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, becoming the first Cardinal to earn a major ACC award. Ekic also earned all-region, All-ACC and All-ACC academic awards. The Louisville native led the Cardinals in scoring seven goals and three assists.
PRIOR TO LOUISVILLE
While with the Kentucky Fire Juniors, Nowak coached six KFJ/MVSC girls’ teams to a Kentucky Youth Soccer State Open Cup Championship and oversaw 18 girls state cup titles since 2010. Since taking over the girls program, 90 percent of all graduating female high school soccer players have went on to compete at the collegiate level under Nowak’s supervision.
Nowak also spent the 2016 season as the head coach at Mercy Academy. He finished the season with an 11-12-2 record and won both the District 24 and Region 6 championships with the Jaguars. He also spent four years (2010-14) as a volunteer assistant at Bellarmine University, developing and training the goalkeepers.
He also spent one season as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas. While with the Razorbacks, he developed, trained and managed all aspects of the goalkeeper performance. The Razorback keepers posted program records with 10 shutouts and an .80 goals against average during the 2009 season.
Before moving to Arkansas, Nowak spent four years as the head coach at Eastern Illinois University. In each of his four years at EIU, he led the Panthers to OVC Tournament appearances, including two semifinals and a trip to the 2005 OVC Championship game.
Nowak developed a strong core of talented players during his tenure in Charleston, Ill. He coached seven first-team All-OVC performers at Eastern Illinois, including the 2006 OVC Player of the Year, Kellie Floyd. Five Panthers earned academic all-district honors and Meghan Ryon was an academic All-American in 2007.
Prior to his stint at Eastern Illinois, Nowak was an assistant coach at the University of Louisville (2001-04). He was part of a coaching staff that guided the Cardinals’ to a 12-5-3 record in 2004, the program’s first above-.500 record since 1993. That season, Louisville finished tied for fourth place in Conference USA.
Nowak played collegiate soccer as a goalkeeper at Western Illinois University where he was a three-year letterwinner. He also holds National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Coaching and NSCAA Goalkeeping diplomas.
Nowak is married to the former Kitty (Katherine) Garner. The couple resides in Louisville with their two sons Garner and Theodore.
