Bio
Senior: Fanz continued to make a statement during her final year of eligibility with the Cardinals in the sprint events. She qualified individually for the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle at the NCAA Championships before the meet was cancelled. At the ACC Championships, she finished third in the 100 freestyle (47.87) after qualifying first during prelims, fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.89), split a 21.50 on UofL’s 200 freestyle relay that finished second, and posted a 47.22 split on the silver-medal 400 freestyle relay. She also anchored the Cardinals’ third-place 200 medley relay in 21.15 and 400 medley relay in 47.67 at her final conference meet. During the dual meet season, she registered nine top-5 finishes and picked up wins in the 50-meter freestyle (26.45) against Indiana/Texas and the 50 freestyle (23.00) versus Northwestern. Fanz earned gold in the 50 freestyle (22.16) and 100 freestyle (48.92) at the Purdue Invitational after placing eighth in the 50-meter freestyle (25.27) and 14th in the 100-meter freestyle (55.78) at the Toyota U.S. Open. For her performances in both the pool and in the classroom, Fanz was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and awarded ACC Honor Roll and CSCAA Scholar All-America honors. She was also named to the CSCAA All-American team for five events.
Junior: Fanz continued to make an impact in the Cards' sprint group during her junior season. At NCAAs, she anchored the fourth-place 200 free relay and swam on the fifth-place 400 free relay. She was a member of three top-five Cardinal relays at the ACC Championships, including the winning 400 free relay. She also finished 10th in the 100 free and 11th in the 50 free at ACCs. During the dual meet season, she registered 13 top-eight finishes, including a runner-up showing in the 100 free against Northwestern. Fanz raced to fifth in 100 free and ninth in the 50 free at the Indiana Invitational and finished seventh in the 50 free at the SMU Classic. For the third-straight year, Fanz was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors for her efforts in the pool and in the classroom.
Sophomore: As a sophomore, Fanz continued to be a mainstay on the Cardinals’ sprint relay squads. At NCAAs, she competed in three top-eight relays for Louisville, including the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, and 200 medley relay. Fanz also competed individually, placing 23rd in the 50 free (22.37) and 22nd in the 100 free (48.43). At the ACC Championships, she brought home a bronze medal in the 50 free with a time of 22.07. She also placed ninth in the 100 free, stopping the clock in a time of 48.58. Fanz posted two top-eight finishes at the Winter National Championships, taking fifth in the 50 free (22.04) and sixth in the 100 free (48.49). She also had a strong showing at the Phillips 66 National Championships, taking 22nd in the 50-meter free (25.71), while also competing in the 100-meter free (55.80). The highlight of Fanz’s dual meet season came against Kentucky, where she led the Cards to a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 free, capturing the win in a time of 22.93. For her performances both in the pool and in the classroom, Fanz was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors.
Freshman: Fanz made an immediate impact for the Cardinals both on the relays and the sprint freestyle events. At NCAAs, she was a member of the record-breaking 200 free relay team, anchoring with a 21.78 split to help the Cardinals finish sixth. She also swam the anchor leg of the tenth place 200 medley relay, and split a 48.51 in the sixth place finishing 400 free relay. Individually, Fanz finished 30th in the 50 free, posting a time of 22.37. At the ACC Championships, she scored 51 points, finishing sixth in the 50 free (22.19), sixth in the 100 free (48.43), and 21st in the 200 free (1:47.95). She also anchored the silver medal winning 200 medley and 400 free relays, as well as the fourth place 200 free relay. At the World Champ Trials in Indy, Fanz swam the 100-meter free (55.97), 50-meter back (29.41), 100-meter back (1:03.27), and swam in the finals of the 50-meter free (25.37), placing 13th. She also swam at the Arena Pro Swim Series in both Mesa and Atlanta, recording a 15th place finish in the 100-meter back (1:04.38) in Mesa and an 11th place finish in the 50-meter free (25.90) in Atlanta. During the dual season, Fanz used her sprint prowess to help the Cardinals win many relay events. Most notably, she anchored the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays against Kentucky in addition to winning the 50 free (23.01) and placing second in the 100 free (50.72). At the UofL Invitational, she won the 100 free in a time of 49.23, while also picking up a third place finish in the 50 free (22.67).
Prep: Fanz comes to Louisville from ACC country in Powhatan, Vir. where she attended Powhatan High School and swam for the Poseidon Swimming. She was an Olympic Trials Qualifier in the 50 and 100 Free and was a member of the NCSA All-American Team that traveled and competed in Ireland after winning the 50 free at the 2014 NCSA Nationals. Fanz was the captain of the Poseidon Senior Women's team and holds 17 club records. She is the 4-time defending state champion in the 50 free, having won consecutive state titles and has been named twice to the First Team All-Metro Richmond Times Dispatch. Academically, Fanz is a two-time Scholastic All-American, a member of NEHS, on the Honor Roll and participated as a Student Ambassador at PHS. She was also the president of the FCA group at PHS and was a keynote speaker at the 2015 VHSL Leadership Conference. Her best time in the 50 free is 22.58, with a 50.56 in the 100-free and a 55.73 in the 100-back.
