Malachi Mahan recently completed his second season as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville after joining Justine Sowry’s staff in 2022.
During his time at Louisville, Mahan has helped guide the Cardinals to 27 wins, along with a pair of NCAA tournament appearances, including a quarterfinal showing in 2023. Louisville has also been ranked among the top 10 and reached as high as fourth in the nation in each of Mahan’s seasons. Additionally, UofL has produced four NFHCA All-Americans and 10 All-West Region selections with Mahan on the coaching staff.
Most recently, the 2023 squad posted a 15-7 overall record and a 3-3 mark in ACC play, reaching the semifinals of the conference tournament and advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. In 2022, the Cardinals finished the season with a 12-8 overall record and an NCAA tournament bid
Mahan came to Louisville after spending eight seasons (2013-20) as an assistant field hockey coach at the University of California.
While in Berkeley, Mahan helped the Bears reach several milestones. In his first season, the Bears advanced to the NorPac Tournament semifinals and the team matched a program-record with six All-NorPac selections, including West Offensive Player of the Year Lara Kruggel and West Defensive Player of the Year Courtney Hendrickson. California went on to win the 2017 America East Conference West Division title. In Mahan’s final season at Cal, Kiki De Bruijn was named the 2020 America East Rookie of the Year and the Bears advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Mahan also helped coach U.S. Women’s National Team member Megan Rodgers and U-21 selections Brynn Zorilla, and Katrina Carter as well as six National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-West Region honorees.
Prior to his stint at California, Mahan was an assistant coach with the U.S. Men’s Under-16 team.
Mahan has established an impressive playing resume, with 10 years with the U.S. Men’s National Team organization (2001-10). The defender earned his first CAP with the national team at the Mexico Four Nations Tournament in Salamancia, Mexico on August 10, 2002 and earned more than 30 caps in his career. Mahan also served as a captain on the 2005 U.S. Pan American Junior Championship team that finished fourth overall in the tournament in Havana, Cuba.
In 2023, Mahan was selected to play for the USA Field Hockey Over 25 Men’s Masters Team in the World Masters Hockey Pan American Continental Cup and finished runner-up in the tournament.
The Camarillo, Calif., native earned his degree in liberal studies at Arizona State in 2013.
