Junior: Kenzie Buss has been at the heart of the backstroke crew for the Cardinals. At ACCs, she was 18th in the 100-back (54.13).- In the dual meet season, she was second in the 1650 versus Cincinnati and at the UofL Invite, where she also got fourth in the 200-free. She swam sprint with a highlight coming in the 100-free where she was second at the UofL Invitational. She competed in the 50-free for the Cards versus Cincinnati, Tennessee and at the UofL Invitational. At the Arena Pro Series in Charlotte, she was a finalist in the 50-meter back, going 29.66 for 15th. She also made the finals of the 100-meter back with a 1:04.05 for 27th place. She competed at the US Open Championships in the 100-meter back with a 1:04.77. She qualified for the US Olympic Team Trials.
Sophomore: Mackenzie Buss continues to be as staunch competitor for the Cardinals with strong showings in the Cardinal relays. At the ACC Championships, she was 19th in the 100-back with a 54.58 and was 28th in the 200-back with a 2:02.86. Highlights in the dual season include being part of the first place 200-medley relay team versus Xavier. She had a sixth place in the 100-back with a time of 57.18. She was second in the 100-back and fourth in the 200-back against Cincinnati. Against Kentucky, she was sixth in the 100-back. At the Indiana meet, she was eighth in both the 100- and 200-back and was a part of the third place 200-medley relay team with a leadoff split of 26.63. At the USA Short Course Nationals, she was 21st with a 54.65 in the 100-back. She was part of the 4x50 free relay team that finished 10th, with her leading off with a 23.74 split. At the Arena Pro Series in Charlotte, she made the finals in the 50-meter back with a 14th place time of 29.67. In the 100-meter back, she made the finals and finished 31st with a time of 1:04.39. She swam three relays versus Florida State with the best finish coming with a fourth place in the 400-medley relay, where she led off with a split of 58.31.
Freshman: Buss had a successful first year with the Cardinals. She placed a school record in the 100-back at the 2014 Championship Qualifier with a time of 53.42. She competed at the AAC Championships with a team third place finish in the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.58. She also placed fourth in 100-back with a time of 53.99 and sixth in the 200 back in 1:59.39. She was named to the All-Conference squad. Buss had six first place finishes to kick off her Cardinal career. She finished first in the 100- and 200-back at the Michigan Invitational (54.10 and 1:58.00) and at Georgia Tech (57.54 and 2:05.64). She also added first place finishes in the 100-back against Kentucky and in a duel event against Cincinnati and Houston. She was a member of a relay squad that posted a fourth place finish in the consolation bracket at the NCAA Championships with a time of 3:34.26
Prep: Mackenzie Buss joined the Cardinals from Shawano, Wisconsin where she attended Shawano Community High School. Buss swam for her high school and also for Shawano Community Swimming Club where she qualified for her first Olympic Trials at 13. In her junior and senior year Buss earned All- American times in the 100- backstroke, was named a three time Scholastic All- American, Scholastic Athlete, and Athlete of the year as a senior.
