
Kipruto Sets ACC 10000m Record at Bryan Clay Invitational

The freshman clocked an NCAA-leading time of 27:29.83 in his outdoor collegiate debut to move to 11th on the all-time collegiate list.
The University of Louisville track & field teams concluded the third day of their split weekend on Friday with athletes split between the Bryan Clay Invitational, Virginia Challenge, and Beach Invitational.

The Cardinals notably set a trio of program records on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational, while Elsingi Kipruto's time of 27:29.83 also set a new ACC record while ranking as the fastest time in the NCAA this season.

BRYAN CLAY INVITATIONAL

The Louisville distance squad continued competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday after a banner first day of action that saw Geoffrey Kirwa clock a world-leading and ACC-record time in the men's 3000m steeplechase.

In the early hours of Friday morning, Kipruto followed suit with an ACC record and NCAA lead of his own in his outdoor collegiate debut, winning the men's 10000m with a blistering time of 27:29.83 that moves him to No. 11 on the all-time collegiate list.

The time took nearly nine seconds off the previous conference record of 27:38.54 that was set by Florida State's Adriaan Wildschutt in 2022 while also shaving a whopping 42 seconds off the previous Louisville program record of 28:11.65 that was set by Ian Kibiwot at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

The Cardinals also saw a pair of program records fall in the 800m events, as Ryan Farrell broke the school record in the men's 800m for the second consecutive meet and Lucinda Rourke set a new program-best in the women's 800m.

Farrell raced to a time of 1:46.24 in the men's 800m to strengthen his hold on the ACC lead while also obliterating the previous program record of 1:47.50 that he set at the Stanford Invitational on Apr. 4. Ethan Brouw also dipped under the previous program record in his first outdoor meet in a Louisville uniform, finishing just behind Farrell with a final time of 1:46.88.

On the women's side, Rourke etched her name into the Louisville record books with a 800m time of 2:06.25 in her outdoor season debut that edged out the previous program record of 2:06.54 that was set by Ahlivia Spencer in 2012.

The Cards also saw Haley Meade set a new personal record in the women's 5000m by over a minute with a time of 16:47.53 to win the open B division of the event, while Gavin Rockwell clocked a time of 14:31.35 to finish fifth in the open C division of the men's 5000m in his first attempt at the distance in his collegiate career.

Louisville athletes will compete late into Friday night in both the men's and women's 5000m before the final day of competition resumes tomorrow evening at with numerous Cardinals set to compete over the 1500m distance.

The Louisville jumpers began competition at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., where the Cards earned a pair of bronze medals in the long jump pit with personal-best performances.

Cullen McReynolds put together the best performance of his young collegiate career, beginning the day's action by posting a mark of 7.36m (24-1.75) in the men's long jump to finish third overall, while Miller Jones placed ninth with a leap of 7.25m (23-9.5).

In the women's long jump, Eve Divinity moved up to third in program history with a final mark of 6.36m (20-10.5) that also stands as a personal record, while Sophia Day notched a mark of 6.00m (19-8.25).Â

The Cardinals will be back in action in Charlottesville tomorrow afternoon with athletes set to take part in both the men's and women's triple jump along with the 200m events.

After concluding the Pacific Coast Invitational yesterday, the Cardinals remained in Long Beach on Friday to kick off the Beach Invitational.

Matt Giuliano narrowly missed out on setting a new personal best in the men's hammer throw, recording a toss of 63.19m (207-3) to finish seventh overall. Freshman Aja Johnson also posted a solid mark of 49.15m (161-3) in the women's hammer throw to close out the day's throwing events.

On the track, Zylah Sturdivant finished fourth in the women's 200m with a wind-aided time of 24.46m (+2.5), while Maya Taylor notched a time of 12.41 (+2.8) in the women's 100m.

The second and final day of competition at the Beach Invitational will begin tomorrow afternoon with the women's discus throw, while action on the track will begin for the Cardinals with the women's 100m hurdles.
