No. 4 Cardinals Blank Morehead State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Outside hitter Payton Petersen had a career high 12 kills to lead the No. 4-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a sweep of in-state opponent Morehead State on Sunday afternoon in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena. The Cards won 25-13, 25-13, 25-17 to move to 2-0 on the season.Â
UofL hit .398 on the day with 46 kills, 50 digs, 12 blocks and five aces. Outside hitter Payton Petersen hit .524 on the match and added nine digs and one service ace. Outside hitter Chloe Chicoine and middle blocker Cara Cresse each posted nine kills and two blocks. Middle blockers Hannah Sherman and Kalyssa Blackshear led the way defensively with six and four blocks, respectively. Setter Hannah Kenny served four aces and dug 15 balls as libero Kamden Schrand contributed 14 digs of her own.Â
Morehead State was held to a .092 clip on 25 kills, 37 digs and four service aces. Outside hitters Sarah Heath and M.E. Hargan led the offense with nine kills apiece and middle blocker Amelia Nott added three of the Eagles' aces.Â
Louisville (2-0) returns to the court on Monday, Sept. 1, to face St. John's in the final match of the Cardinal Classic. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. at L&N Arena.Â
Set 1: Morehead State 13, Louisville 25
In the first set, Louisville steadily climbed to a sizable lead, going up 15-11 at the media timeout. Â Out of the timeout, Nayelis Cabello grabbed her second kill before Morehead State answered with one of its own. A service error by the Eagles and a solo block from Hannah Sherman put the Cards ahead 18-12 and forced MSU to take its first timeout. UofL kept on scoring as Chicoine and Sherman each posted a kill and connected for a block to extend Louisville's lead to nine at 21-12. Morehead State burned its second timeout and managed to knock down a kill out of the break to end a 5-0 Cards run. UofL finished the set on a 4-0 scoring run off of kills from Chicoine and Petersen and blocks from Sherman, Petersen and Blackshear to win the set 25-13.
Set 2: Morehead State 13, Louisville 25
MSU took the first point on an attack error but a service error by the Eagles got the Cards on the board. Cresse and Petersen followed it up with kills and Morehead State added one of its own. Louisville went on a 6-0 run on solo blocks from Cresse and Petersen along with kills from Petersen and Cabello to go ahead 9-2. The teams traded points before UofL eventually went up 14-5, featuring kills from Chicoine and Addison Makun. MSU burned its second timeout of the set and took a point back out of the break. Chicoine, Makun and Cresse added more kills and Makun connected with Blackshear for two blocks. At 23-12, a kill from Petersen gave Louisville set point. Morehead State held off the end of the set with a kill, but an attack error from the Eagles sealed the set win 25-13 for the Cards.Â
Set 3: Morehead State 17, Louisville 25
A kill from Morehead State started off the third set before a service error by the Eagles and consecutive aces by Hannah Kenny put Louisville up 3-1. An attack error gave MSU back a point, but the Cards answered with kills from Cresse and Ava Utterback and an ace from Petersen. UofL went on a 7-0 scoring run that was highlighted by a kill from Blackshear, two aces from Kenny and four consecutive kills by Petersen. The Cards were up 18-7 when Morehead State added two more points on a kill and an error. Cresse stopped the momentum with a kill and a solo block before a kill from Cabello forced the Eagles second timeout of the set, down 21-9. Out of the break, MSU added a kill and an ace until Cabello stuffed a solo block. The teams traded kills before Morehead State went on a 5-0 scoring run with three aces from Nott. The run ended on a service error, and Blackshear finished the match with a kill, winning the set 25-17.Â
