Rylie Wollerton notches a pair of goals to lead Louisville to a 5-0 win over Ohio
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville field hockey team picked up its second straight win of the season with a 5-0 victory over Ohio University Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
The Cards improve to 2-0 on the season while the Bobcats drop to 0-2.
"This was a tough game," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Credit to Ohio, they played back-to-back games and they played hard. They had a lot of speed, a really tough team, a tough defense and we struggled a little bit. With their speed, we started really poorly in the sense that we were frantic on the ball and then our counter defensive shapes were really poor. We finally started to get into a groove and built some momentum. We still have a lot to work on, but overall I'm very pleased come away from this weekend with two wins."
Senior Rylie Wollerton led the way with a pair of goals and an assist. Sophomore Gigi Edwards and freshman Gracie Potter notched their first collegiate goals. Junior Lauren Masters also scored and Izzy Bianco delivered two assists in the contest. Sophomore Emily Young and freshman Alessia Cicuto split time in the cage with Young picking up one save in the shutout.
The teams battled through a scoreless tie before the Cards stuck twice in the final five minutes of the second quarter. Wollerton got the offense going when she deflected a penalty corner pass from Bianco to put Louisville on the scoreboard. Just over a minute later, Edwards collected the rebound after an Ohio goalkeeper Gwen Hershberger save and sent the ball to the back of the cage.
Louisville took the 2-0 lead into halftime after outshooting Ohio 13-2 and holding a 7-1 advantage in corners.
After a scoreless third quarter the Cards came out firing early in the fourth. In the third minute of the frame, Bianco and Wollerton connected again to give the Cards a 3-0 lead. This time Bianco delivered a shot from the middle of the circle and Wollerton redirected it into the cage for her team-best fifth goal of early season.
Three minutes later, Wollerton assisted Potter who connected from the left post to make the score 4-0. The Cards capped the scoring with under five minutes to play when junior Tyler Everslage sent a cross to Masters who delivered her second goal of the season.
In the game, Louisville outshot Ohio 22-3 with a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal and held a 9-1 edge in penalty corners.
The Cardinals will return to action next week when they hit the road for a pair of games in Bloomington, Ind., starting with a neutral site matchup against Drexel Saturday at 11 a.m. Louisville will then face Indiana Sunday at 12 p.m
