Synclair Savage Wins National Title in Women’s Long Jump

The redshirt senior becomes the fifth outdoor NCAA champion in program history.
EUGENE, Ore. – University of Louisville women's track & field redshirt senior Synclair Savage captured the national title in the women's long jump as the Cardinals capped off the second of four days of competition at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Thursday.
With the victory, she becomes the fifth outdoor NCAA champion in program history and the first since 2022, while also becoming the first in program history to win the national championship in the women's long jump.
Seeded eighth entering the competition, Savage leapt from fourth place to the top of the leaderboard on her final attempt with an incredible mark of 6.72m (22-0.75) that broke the previous program record of 6.64m (21-9.5) that she set two weeks ago at the NCAA East Regional.
In the women's shot put, Jayden Ulrich earned fourth place in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second consecutive season, garnering First Team All-American distinction with a final mark of 18.26m (59-11). The senior will return to the ring in the women's discus throw on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET as she looks to build off her runner-up finish in the discus from a year ago.
The men's decathlon also came to a close on Thursday, as KJ Byrd closed out his historic freshman season with a fourth-place finish after totaling 7,842 points and Paul Kallenberg placed 10th with 7,669 points.
After ending the first day of competition in ninth place, Byrd put together a stellar final five events with four personal-best marks, including a new freshman record in the pole vault, to move up five spots and earn First Team All-American honors.
Over the course of the final day, the rookie clocked a 110m hurdles time of 14.60, recorded a mark of 39.83m (130-8) in the discus throw, cleared an eye-popping bar of 5.31m (17-5) in the men's pole vault, notched a toss of 50.03m (164-1) in the javelin throw, and raced to a 1500m time of 4:44.32.
On his way to the first All-American honor of his illustrious Louisville career, Kallenberg earned marks of 15.31 in the 110m hurdles, 39.76m (130-5) in the discus throw, 4.71m (15-5.5) in the pole vault, 54.94m (180-3) in the javelin throw, and a personal-best time of 4:38.50 in the 1500m.
Ashley Callahan also earned the first All-American honor of her career, clearing a final bar of 4.24m (13-11) to finish the women's pole vault a tie for 12th in her NCAA Championships debut.
Layla Roebke closed out the day for the Cards in the women's 3000m steeplechase, placing 24th in 10:14.24 to cap off a season that saw her record the four fastest times in school history while lowering the previous program record by over 25 seconds.
Tomorrow, the Cards will field three athletes in three events as the men's competition concludes, and the women's heptathlon gets underway. The full schedule of events for Louisville athletes for Friday can be found below.
