May 03, 2025 | Softball
The Cards will head to the ACC Tournament next week, awaiting the conclusion of the regular season to determine their opponent.
Louisville will close out its regular season with a 26-24 overall record and a 9-15 ACC record.
In game one of today's doubleheader, the Panthers made it out with a 12–2 win. After the Cards grabbed the early 2-0 lead, Pitt quickly tied the game with solo home runs from Tieley Vaughn and Camryn Murphy. Kylie Griggs gave Pitt the lead with a solo homer in the fifth. The Panthers added nine runs in the sixth inning, featuring a three-run homer by Hernandez and RBIs from multiple players.
The final game of the series saw a great response by the Cardinals to clinch the win over the Panthers.
Louisville struck first in the opening inning as Easton Lotus drove in the game's first run with an RBI groundout. Pitt responded in the fourth with a three-hit rally, capped off by Vaughn's solo home run and an RBI double by Ana Hernandez, cutting into Louisville's early 3–0 lead.
The Cardinals' bats stayed hot as Maddi Grant crushed a solo home run in the fifth to extend the lead to 4–2. But Pitt stormed back with a three-run fifth inning. A double from Kaitlyn Brannstrom, an RBI single by Murphy, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch gave the Panthers a 5–4 edge.
Louisville wasted no time responding. Char Lorenz tied the game in the sixth with a solo shot to left center—her third hit of the night and second RBI. With the home run, Lorenz broke the program's single-season freshman record for RBIs with her 53rd of the season.
After a scoreless seventh, Louisville broke it open in the top of the ninth. RBI singles by Lorenz and Grant, along with a sac fly from Camryn Lookadoo, pushed the Cardinals ahead 8–5.
Brooke Gray (9–9) was masterful in relief, pitching 4.1 innings of one-hit ball to shut down Pitt's offense and earn the win. Starter Alyssa Zabala worked the first 4.2 innings but gave up all five Pitt runs.
Louisville's offense racked up 13 hits, with Lorenz and Grant leading the way—both going 3-for-4. Pitt managed eight hits but couldn't solve Gray late in the game. Despite an early comeback, the Panthers were held scoreless over their final four innings.
The Cards will begin their postseason run as they head to the ACC Tournament next week, hosted by Boston College. The tournament takes place from May 7-10. The official bracket will be announced on Sunday, May 4 following the conclusion of the regular season.
