Cards Defeat Georgia Tech to Advance in ACC Tournament

Louisville will face No. 6 seed Florida State on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET
CARY, N.C. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team upset Georgia Tech by a final score of 4-2 in a late-night battle to advance to the second round of the ACC Tournament.Â

The Cards took control of doubles competition early as the tandem of Kosuke Nakanishi and Andre' Steinbach first claimed a 6-3 win over the No. 13 duo in the country. Hamza El Amine and Natan Rodrigues followed suit shortly after with a 6-1 win on Court 2 to clinch the doubles point for Louisville.
Heading into singles with an early advantage, the Cards continued their hot streak as Miguel Avendaño was first to finish with a strong 6-1, 6-2 victory on Court 5.Â
Right behind him was Nakanishi as the Japan-native took down his opponent in straight sets to put Louisville within a point of winning.Â
Georgia Tech then claimed courts three and two, but not without a fight from UofL as both Yellow Jackets had to win seven games.Â
Senior Rodrigues brought home the victory for the Cards as he defeated No. 118 Nate Bonetto 7-5, 6-4 on Court 1 after rallying back in the first set.Â
Louisville will move on to play No. 6 seeded Florida State in the second round on Thursday with first serve set for 6 p.m. ET. The Cards and Seminoles met on April 5 of this year where Florida State claimed a 4-2 victory. In the most recent ITA team poll, the Seminoles were ranked at a strong No. 17.Â
