Louisville earns first ranked win of the season and first since 2023
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team earns its first ranked win of the season and the first since 2023, defeating No.57 Virginia Tech 4-0 Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 10-7 overall and 2-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The last time the Cards took down a ranked conference opponent was April 16, 2023, as they took down No.36 Syracuse 4-3 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Doubles action was highly competitive to begin the match as all courts saw each team trade games early on. Court 3 saw the Hokie duo of Mila Mulready and Linda Ziets-Segura edge out Germany Davis and Elizabeth Iila 6-4. The pairing of Berta Miret and Lika Peresypkina earned a huge ranked win on Court 2 over the No.83rd duo of Charlotte Cartledge and Özlem Usla 6-3, leaving the doubles point to be decided on Court 1. Both pairings went back and forth during the first set, needing a tiebreaker to decide the doubles point. Louisville's duo of Alice Otis and Allie Gretkowski went up 3-1 in the tiebreaker, but Virginia Tech never let up. Otis and Gretkowski fought off a slew of match points and eventually clinched the doubles point for the Cards, 7-6 (10-8).
In singles play, Gretkowski continues her efficient play at the No.4 spot, making quick work of Arina Gamretkaia 6-1, 6-1 to extend the UofL lead. Shortly after, Elena Noguero gets the job done on Court 3, defeating Semra Aksu 6-3, 6-2 to push the score to 3-0 in the match.
It was the freshman Elisabeth Iila who secured the match for Louisville, defeating Mulready 6-3, 6-4 on Court 6 and improves to 7-0 in singles play on the season.
The Cardinals will return home on Friday to kick off a four-match homestand, beginning with No. 25 Georgia Tech. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
