Cards Earn First ACC Win of the Season

Louisville sweeps No. 73 Virginia Tech 4-0 on Friday Afternoon
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team picked up its first ACC win of the year, sweeping the Virginia Tech Hokies 4-0 on Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"We have had a tough stretch playing five of the top 15 teams in the country all in the last three weeks," said head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We learned lessons, kept working hard and it showed on the court today. The guys played well and earned the win."

Hamza El Amine and Natan Rodrigues picked up their third victory in a row together on the doubles court, defeating their opponents from Virginia Tech on Court 2, starting the Cards off on the right note.

UofL dropped the match on Court 1 but quickly responded with a 6-4 win on Court 3 by Miguel Avendaño and Will Mayew, earning Louisville the doubles point.

Louisville kept the momentum going as Mayew won his match in straight sets in the Cards' top spot, defeating the Hokie's Maxime St. Hilarie 6-4, 6-2. This is the junior's fourth singles victory in a row with all of his wins coming in straight sets.Â

The Cardinals' third point came on Court 4 at the hands of Avendaño who won his match in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Match point was earned by Andre' Steinbach on Court 3, holding off his opponent and clinching Louisville's first ACC victory of the year for the Cardinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Louisville will turn its attention to No. 5 Virginia who visits the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center at noon on Sunday. The Cardinals will follow up that match with an evening battle against Tennessee State at 5 p.m.
