Louisville falls to No. 5 Virginia in the morning, sweeps TSU in the nightcap
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team dropped their morning match against No. 5 Virginia 4-1, but posted a dominant showing in the nightcap by sweeping Tennessee State 7-0.Â
No. 5 Virginia 4, Louisville 1Â
The Cavaliers claimed the doubles point after a competitive contest against the Cards. The Virginia tandem of No. 34 Mans Dahlberg and Dylan Dietrich finished first, taking Court 2 with a score of 6-4. After a tough battle on the first court, the No. 28 tandem of James Hopper and Keegan Rice walked away with a 6-4 win.Â
Virginia's No. 21 Dietrich got to work early in the top spot, taking down Will Mayew 6-1, 6-1 to start singles competition.
Next to fall was Piet Steveker on Court 6 whose comeback fell short after he trailed by four games in the second set, but ended up dropping the court 6-1, 6-4.Â
Senior Natan Rodrigues earned the lone point of the match for the Cards, taking down Cavalier Keegan Rice in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Jangjun Kim clinched the match for Virginia as he rallied back to defeat Hamza El Amine in three sets by a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Louisville 7, Tennessee State 0
Louisville started off the second match of the day strong by earning the doubles point. Steveker and Kosuke Nakanishi got the first victory by defeating the Court 2 Tigers tandem by a score of 6-4. El Amine and Rodrigues followed suit shortly after with a 6-4 victory on the top court to clinch the doubles point for the Cards.
Mayew was the first player to win in singles competition, earning a 6-1, 6-1 triumph to push the Louisville lead to 2-0 in the nightcap.Â
Sophomore Steveker was next to finish, sweeping his opponent in the second set to claim a 6-4, 6-0 victory.Â
Kansas native Russell Lokko clinched the match for the Cards by taking down his opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.Â
With the match victory secured, the Cards continued to battle it out and defeated three of their remaining opponents in straight sets.Â
Miguel Avendaño pulled off an incredible feat in his individual match by winning his first set in a tiebreak by a dominant score of 7-0. He later went on to secure a victory in the second set with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 final.Â
Earning his fifth singles win of the year, Enrique Peña defeated Tennessee State's Rohan Loubser 6-4, 6-4 on Court 4.Â
After a back-and-forth battle on Court 2, Andre' Steinbach ended the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 win over Jonasz Dziopak.
Louisville will hit the road for the final time this season and head to Florida to face ranked talent. The Cards will face No. 25 Miami on Thursday at noon and No. 27 Florida State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
