The Cards look to clinch the series tomorrow at noon
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team fell to North Carolina, 13-5 on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals move to 19-11 on the season and 3-5 in the ACC.
Louisville had a strong start with Chelsea Mack singling and Bri Despines getting on base via hit by pitch. With two on base, Char Lorenz singled to right field to bring in Mack and advance Despines to third. Madison Pickens added a bunt single to score Despines and give the Cards an early 2-0 lead.
However, the Tarheels responded with two runs of their own after four singles to get on base. The second inning saw no runs scored on either side.
Easton Lotus singled to lead off the third inning but that was all the Cards could produce offensively. UNC hit two home runs, scoring a total of four runs and putting them up 6-2. The Tarheels added five more runs on three hits to round out the fourth inning and give them an 11-2 lead.
The Cards were able to gain a bit of momentum with a single from Lotus and a triple from Lorenz that brought in both Despines and Lotus. Pickens followed up with a double to left field to score Lorenz and force a pitching change by the Tarheels. Louisville was able to shorten the gap to 11-5 going into the bottom of the fifth.
However, UNC's Sanaa Thompson sent a two-run homer to center field to end the game early and leave the score at 13-5.
The Cards will look to clinch the series tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch scheduled at noon. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX.
