CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team grabbed its first ACC road win of the year in a 7-4 victory over North Carolina on Friday evening. The Cardinals move to 19-10 (3-4 ACC) on the season with the win.
Junior Bri Despines and redshirt freshman Char Lorenz led the team with three RBIs a piece, both coming in three-run homers. Alyssa Zabala (8-3) got the win in the circle, allowing four runs and striking out two in four innings. Sam Booe secured her second save of the season, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out two.
The Tarheels got on the board first with Sanaa Thompson homering to left field to give UNC a 2-0 lead in the second inning. A trio of singles loaded the bases for UNC but a pop-up to Easton Lotus ended the inning with no further damage.
Chelsea Mack tallied the Cards' first hit of the game in the fourth inning, singling up the middle. Despines followed with a single through the left side, advancing Mack to second. With two on base, Lorenz responded with a home run of her own, bringing in Despines and Mack for a 3-2 lead.
However, UNC responded with four singles to bring in a run with one out on the board. Rodriguez hit a sac fly to center field, allowing Jackson to score and giving the Tarheels a 4-3 lead after four innings of action.
The Cards answered, going on a 4-0 scoring run to secure the game. Taylor Monroe got on base via walk, quickly stealing second and advancing to third on a Lotus single. Despines hit her fourth home run of the year, bringing in three more runs to close out the fifth inning.
Louisville had the 6-4 advantage heading into the sixth inning but was able to add one more thanks to an RBI double from Camryn Lookadoo that brought in Madison Pickens.
The Cards look to secure the series win tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on the ACCNX.
