Ulrich & Byrd Tabbed First Team All-Americans to End Indoor Season
March 15, 2025 | Track & Field
Ulrich finished sixth in the women’s shot put for the second straight year, while Byrd placed seventh in the men’s heptathlon.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The University of Louisville track & field teams concluded the 2024-25 indoor campaign on Saturday afternoon as Jayden Ulrich and KJ Byrd earned First Team All-American distinction at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Ulrich matched her sixth-place finish from last year's national championship meet in the women's shot put, recording a mark of 18.04m (59-3.5) on her way to becoming the first Louisville female to earn First Team All-American honors in back-to-back indoor seasons since Emmonnie Henderson did so in the women's shot put in 2017 and 2018.
After two indoor seasons in a Louisville uniform, Ulrich not only owns the program record of 18.40m (60-4.5) in the event but also owns eight of the top 10 tosses in program history, five of which came during the 2024-25 campaign.
Byrd posted the best individual finish at the national championship meet in the men's heptathlon in program history, placing seventh with 5,807 points in his first career appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Sitting eighth through the first four events of the competition that took place on Friday, Byrd moved up one spot over the final day of competition by recording times of 8.22 in the 60m hurdles and 2:51.35 in the 1000m, while also clearing a personal-best bar of 5.27m (17-3.5) in the pole vault. The freshman now owns three of the top four heptathlon scores in program history, including a school-record total of 5,903 points that he recorded at the ACC Indoor Championships.
The Cardinals will now turn their attention to the 2025 outdoor season, which will begin next weekend on Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22 with the USF Alumni Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
