The University of Louisville track & field teams began their split weekend on Firday with a trio of record-breaking performances while splitting between the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, Don Kirby Elite, Music City Challenge, and the Windy City Invitational.
Cade DeWitt broke his own program record in the men's pole vault at the Don Kirby Elite, while Ryan Farrell recorded the fastest men's 800m time in Louisville history at the Windy City Invitational. Additionally, Geoffrey Kirwa set his third freshman record of the season in the men's 3000m at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
Over the course of the first day of competition, the Cardinals combined for a total of 10 marks that rank among the top 10 in program history while also tallying 15 personal-best performances.
More detailed highlights from each meet can be found below.
DAVID HEMERY VALENTINE INVITATIONAL
Competing at one of the nation's premier collegiate indoor distance meets, Kirwa clocked a time of 8:00.18 in the men's 3000m to set his third freshman record of the season and move to second in program history. Through the first three indoor meets of his Louisville career, the native of Kapsabet, Kenya holds the top freshman marks in the men's mile, 3000m and 5000m while holding the school record in the mile, ranking second overall in the 3000m, and third overall in the 5000m.
Gustav Bendsen also competed in the men's 3000m at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center, racing to a personal-best time of 8:07.52 that moves the sophomore to sixth in program history.
Attention will turn to the meet's women's events tomorrow, as the Cardinals begin their day at 1:45 p.m. ET in the women's mile.
DON KIRBY ELITE
The Don Kirby Elite saw the first program record of the day fall when DeWitt cleared a bar of 5.35m (17-6.5) in the men's pole vault. The mark bested his own program record of 5.32m (17-5.5) that he set last January as a freshman at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational while also shattering his previous season-best mark of 5.04m (16-6.5).
Lydia Stuart picked up an event victory in Section B of the women's pole vault, clearing a new personal-best bar of 4.18m (13-8.5) to move her up to sixth in the program record books.
Along with their success in the pole vault, the Cardinals also got a pair of winning performances in Albuquerque in the high jump events. Soledad Jean tied for first in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.77m (5-9.75), while Brion Stephens claimed victory in the men's high jump with a season-best mark of 2.18m (7-1.75).
Synclair Savage also set a season-best of her own in the women's long jump, finishing as the event runner-up with a leap of 6.34m (20-9.75).
The Cards return to action at the Albuquerque Convention Center with the women's unseeded 60m beginning the day's track events at 12:55 p.m. ET and Section A of the women's pole vault kicking off the day's field events at 2:30 p.m. ET.
MUSIC CITY CHALLENGE
Noah Koch won the men's weight throw at the Music City Challenge in Nashville, recording a toss of 20.40m (66-11.25) in the event. In the women's weight throw, Jade Whitfield notched a mark of 18.95m (62-2.25) to earn a fourth-plae finish.
Lucy Fellows began her weekend with a third-place finish in the women's 600m, knocking nearly two seconds off her previous personal-best with a final time of 1:35.99, good for ninth in Louisville history.
Saturday's competition will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET with the unseeded section of the women's 3000m, while the day's field events are set to start at 10:00 a.m. ET with the men's shot put.
WINDY CITY INVITATIONAL
Ryan Farrell led the charge for the Cardinals at the Windy City Invitational, racing to a school-record time of 1:48.55 in the men's 800m to place fourth overall. The time smashed the previous program-best of 1:49.76 that Chris Danks set back in 2008.
The Cards also saw a pair of performances that rank among the top 10 in school history in the women's 60m. Kiyah Yeast finished as the meet's runner-up in 7.35 to move to third in program history, and Olivia Jenkins advanced to eighth in the Louisville record books with a time of 7.45. In the men's 60m, Jaidyn Johnson raced to a time of 6.72 in both the preliminary round and the finals to place fourth overall.
Freshman Elijah Porter set a new personal-best in the men's 400m with a time of 48.28 that ranks seventh in school history, while Trevor Holbrook followed close behind in 48.44, the eighth-fastest time ever run in a Louisville uniform.
Action in Chicago will resume at Gately Stadium tomorrow morning with the women's 200m at 12:00 p.m. ET.
